Horses Sweet Pea and Tanner head to their forever home

September 13, 2018

It’s a story with a happy ending: horse Sweet Pea, along with her foal, Tanner, will be going home to live with their new guardians in Clearwater.

You may remember Sweet Pea: earlier this year the BC SPCA put out a call for suggestions for a name for her foal, who was born at our Surrey Good Shepherd Barn on Apr. 22.

A big thank you to everyone who submitted a name suggestion for Sweet Pea's foal. The name Tanner was randomly selected today out at the barn, and we think it suits the foal perfectly!Sweet Pea and Tanner are available for adoption, if you are interested in meeting them both, please email rescues@spca.bc.ca to set up an appointment. You can also call the BC SPCA Surrey Education & Adoption Centre at 604-574-1711 to leave a message for our barn staff. Any adopter should be experienced with horses and foals.Thank you again for helping us find a name for this adorable guy!

Sweet Pea also came into the care of the BC SPCA after a cruelty investigation.

“Sweet Pea arrived at the BC SPCA underweight, pregnant and nervous of people,” says Skye Harnett, acting farm animal care supervisor in the cruelty investigations department. “She’s made such big improvements. As for Tanner, he’s growing so fast, and he’s quite eager to get to know people. He also loves to play!” Tanner charmed hundreds of people after he was filmed playing with a blue ball at the Good Shepherd Barn, and the video was shared on social media.

Long Wait Wednesday❤️: This is Tanner – an adorable colt with a spunky personality looking for a forever home for himself and his mom, Sweet Pea. Sweet Pea is a lovely mare who is approximately 12 years old and 14.3hh. She was a bit timid and nervous when she first came into our care, but with plenty of TLC, she has come to enjoy be doted on! If you are interested in adopting Tanner and Sweet Pea, or any of the many other horses currently in our care, please email rescues@spca.bc.ca for more information. Harnett says she’s sure Tanner and Sweet Pea will have plenty of room to enjoy themselves once they arrive at their new home. “The couple who’s adopting them live on more than 100 acres in Clearwater. Tanner will have some new yearling friends to play with on this land where he and his mom can roam, play and live like horses were intended to live: as a herd. We’re grateful they’re going to a good home, and this wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the BC SPCA’s amazing supporters.”

Congratulations to Tanner, Sweet Pea and their new guardians!

There are a number of animals looking for their own forever homes just like these two were. If you’re interested in finding a new forever friend, be sure to check out our adoption page to learn more.
