Rescued from the roadside: the transformation of two abandoned puppies

August 3, 2024

It is hard to imagine someone dumping two defenseless puppies on the side of the road, but that is exactly what happened to Brody and Blake. These border mix puppies were abandoned on a remote stretch of road in Nehemiah Valley. By some miracle they were found by a kind passerby who reached out to the BC SPCA’s Williams Lake animal centre.

“They were so scared when we brought them into the animal centre,” says Elizabeth Dighton, manager of the BC SPCA’s Williams Lake centre. “They were immediately brought to a veterinary clinic to be examined. Thankfully, they were relatively healthy, just underweight and dirty. They had obviously missed a few meals.”

Every week, the BC SPCA Drive for Lives program transfers animals between BC SPCA animal centres across the province to give them the best possible chance at finding their loving families. And that’s exactly what happened for Brody and Blake. We are happy to share that both brothers have found incredible loving homes!

Brody

When Brody first came into care with his brother, he was timid but excited to learn. It was obvious this sweet boy had endless potential. Now, he lives his dream life helping his carpenter guardian at work and enjoying long walks and hikes. Brody absolutely loves the outdoors. He even has an older sibling to help show him the way and build his confidence! He is growing up to be a strong, confident, independent boy.

Blake (now Winston)

When Blake arrived at the BC SPCA, he was the more fearful of the two young dogs, but he is now thriving, living his best life with an incredible family.
Blake, now lovingly renamed Winston, has come a long way since leaving the BC SPCA.

“Winston has been with me for about two months now. He is just wonderful and growing so fast. He’s grown from 18 to 32 pounds! And his adult teeth are coming in now,” shares Winston’s new guardian Alexander. “I recently took him down to Washington for the long weekend. We explored Bainbridge Island, Seattle and Puget Sound. We’ve also taken a trip to Vancouver Island together – he really enjoyed the ferry ride, especially because of BC Ferries’ new policy that allows dogs on the top deck!”

Winston is learning to love exploring new environments – he’s been to the Greek Days and Khatsahlano festivals, where he had a blast meeting lots of people and other dogs. He’s even made a couple of close puppy friends to play with at the park. At home, he loves to run around the backyard and is a lover of sticks and his chew toys.

“I’m just so thrilled to know how well Brody and Winston are doing now that they’re settling into their new homes,” says Dighton. “We always knew they are the most wonderful dogs, they just needed the right guardian to show them love!”
