In February, the BC SPCA introduced its 2025-2030 Strategic Plan with an exciting new vision for animal welfare in B.C. The goal? To create a future where both animals and people can thrive together.
The plan focuses on three main priorities over the next six years:
- Addressing Root Causes – Tackling the issues that lead to animal suffering in the first place.
- Strengthening the Safety Net – Continuing to prevent harm and provide support to vulnerable animals.
- Nurturing the Long-term Organizational Health – Ensuring the BC SPCA can be here for the animals for as long as they need us.
With animal shelters and wildlife rehabilitation facilities across North America sounding the alarm over an overwhelming number of vulnerable animals in need, the BC SPCA’s focus on these three areas is key to breaking the cycle of animal suffering before it starts.
Over the next six years, the BC SPCA will begin to slowly shift direct protection and sheltering to care for the most vulnerable animals, while simultaneously looking for ways to reduce overall animal vulnerability with proactive, community-based approaches. This means digging into the deeper reasons animals become vulnerable and then finding ways the BC SPCA can address them while having the biggest impact for the largest number of animals.
The BC SPCA’s CEO Craig Daniell says “Addressing all the root causes of animal suffering will not be a task the BC SPCA can tackle alone—we will need the ongoing support of our volunteers, community members, and strategic partners to make meaningful progress. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to live up to our name—the BC Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. By focusing on preventing animal distress before it happens, we can help a greater number of animals and build a compassionate future for all.”
