BC SPCA special constables seized more animals yesterday in day two of an animal cruelty warrant in Cobble Hill. On Oct. 5 the SPCA seized 88 Berkshire pigs from a farm in the area, and yesterday officers returned to the property to seize two more pigs and 16 ducks. The pigs, a rare breed of swine originating from Berkshire, England, were seized after their owner refused to comply with SPCA orders to improve the welfare of the animals.
“The pigs were living in extremely poor conditions without access to potable water,” said Marcie Moriarty, general manager of cruelty investigations for the BC SPCA. “The animals were also suffering from untreated parasites and medical problems and were being housed in a substandard and dangerous manner.” Moriarty said the BC SPCA is grateful to the BC Pork Producers Association for their cooperation and assistance with the warrant. The owner of the seized animals is not a member of the association.

The seized pigs are currently being boarded in the area and are under the care of the SPCA. The BC SPCA will be recommending charges of animal cruelty in the case.
