Blackball the pug came to the BC SPCA with her four puppies as a result of a cruelty investigation. This little pug family was surrendered from a property on Vancouver Island along with 16 other adult French bulldogs and pugs.
The dogs received treatment for a range of issues including lice, ear mites, cherry eye, ear infections and intestinal parasites.
Blackball and her puppies recovered in a foster home until they were ready to be adopted. One of her babies, Tilly, was the runt of the litter and very attached to her mother. The foster decided to adopt Blackball, who is now named Olive, and Tilly together.
The BC SPCA investigates more than 8,000 cases of animal cruelty each year. All costs are funded by community donations.
Olive and Tilly’s adopter writes:
“Olive and Tilly are such characters in their own individual way, such personalities. Olive is still being a mother to Tilly in a sweet watchful and very tolerant way. Her disposition is gentle and calm and she is very loyal. They both are friendly to everyone they meet.
Tilly is very full of spunk, playful and curious but willing to please/learn. She is dependent on her mum for comfort in the need to sleep beside her or on top of her or under her. They love their walks and know the word or sound of their harnesses. Tilly likes to be first and lead the pack.
When we are visiting my daughter’s farm they enjoy exploring and running full tilt. They both love eating, cuddling and sleeping. I’d say they are well balanced dogs and I am so glad they are part of my family.”

The pugs and French bulldogs who were surrendered from a property on Vancouver Island are recovering in foster homes. These dogs came to the BC SPCA Comox Valley & District and Cowichan & District branches with lice, ear mites, intestinal parasites, ear infections and various other issues requiring treatment. Thanks to all SPCA supporters these dogs received the medical care they needed and will find loving homes.

BC SPCA caring for 21 dogs surrendered by Vancouver Island breeder

The BC SPCA is caring for 21 French bulldogs and pugs surrendered by a Vancouver Island breeder.
The dogs range in age from six weeks to six years old and are suffering from skin issues. Several dogs need soft-palate surgery, nasal surgery, one has digestive issues and some have cherry eye. They require treatment for ear infections, dentals and one is on antibiotics for a badly infected tail that may require surgery.
The dogs came from an individual who is known to BC SPCA Special Provincial Constables and has previously surrendered animals to the SPCA. The constable who attended the property noted that it was cluttered, dirty and parts of the floor had been ripped up to reveal plywood underneath.
“The BC SPCA is continuing to advocate for breeder regulations that would outline standards of care for dogs and cats in this largely unregulated industry,” says Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA. “We are still waiting on the provincial government to enact these important regulations.”
The dogs are not yet available for adoption and are being cared for at the Comox Valley & District SPCA, the Cowichan & District SPCA and in foster homes. Those interested in adopting one of these dogs are asked to please email the branch.
