Volunteer Appreciation Week: Andrea Friedrich, volunteer, BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre

May 1, 2025

This Volunteer Week, the BC SPCA is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions of our dedicated volunteer team members across the province. Whether they’re providing hands-on care to animals, sharing stories, or supporting outreach efforts, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their compassion, commitment, and selfless dedication make our work possible—and make a lasting difference in the lives of both animals and people across British Columbia.

Beginning her role in March 2025, Andrea Friedrich has already made a lasting impression on the Wild ARC community and the animals in care. Friedrich is spending six weeks volunteering with Wild ARC this spring, having already completed two weeks as an animal care volunteer. A biology and chemistry high school teacher of 15 years from Switzerland, Friedrich discovered Wild ARC online while looking for volunteer opportunities related to wildlife biology in Canada near Vancouver.

“It was the first thing I found—and exactly what I was looking for,” Friedrich explained. “I really, really appreciate being here. It’s so different from what I do at home. I get to learn and be near animals, like a beaver and a goose I helped care for.”

Ashley Currie, manager of the BC SPCA Wild ARC, is thrilled to have Friedrich on her team. “Through the Internex program, which supports passionate international youth in gaining volunteer experiences in Canada and other countries, Andrea is now helping with everything from feeding and cleaning to enclosure set-up and wildlife care. Her enthusiasm and thoughtful presence have made her a joy to work with during this spring season!”

What stands out most for Andrea is the people: “Everyone is so kind and helpful. I don’t feel uncomfortable asking questions—maybe it’s Canadian culture—but I really enjoy the friendly, supportive atmosphere.”

This National Volunteer Week is especially meaningful for the BC SPCA as it marks the first celebration since the launch of our new Strategic Plan in February 2025. A key focus of the plan is to elevate the essential role of our dedicated volunteers, whose compassion is at the heart of everything we do. As we look to the future, we are more committed than ever to empowering and recognizing our incredible volunteer community.
