Shirley Nugent has been a dedicated supporter of the BC SPCA for almost 50 years!

While attending a local community college in 1969, Shirley’s niece called to let her know that a professor was planning to bring a cat into class the next day for the purposes of administering a hallucinogenic drug.  Shirley got in touch with Jack Homes, then President of the Vancouver Regional Branch, and let him know about this terrible plan. Thankfully, Jack was able to put a stop to it. Shirley was closely involved with the BC SPCA from that point on.

For many years, Shirley volunteered with a group called the ‘Friends of the SPCA’ which raised much needed funds for the SPCA Vancouver Hospital Trust Fund.  This generous collective did everything from hosting and organizing a Christmas rummage sale, to organizing bake sales and knitting blankets for the animals!

Shirley is passionate about protecting those who cannot speak for themselves. She has always had feline and canine companions and was known in her neighbourhood as the ‘free boarder’.  Her back door was always open and Shirley would sometimes come home to two or three of her neighbours’ dogs paying her a visit!  Shirley believes that the human-animal bond is incredibly valuable and highly beneficial for mental and physical well-being.

For nearly a half-century, Shirley has made a lasting impact on the animals through her generous donation of time and much needed funds for those in need. Shirley has even thoughtfully made a planned gift for the animals in her will.

Thank you for being a true hero to the animals, Shirley!
