Port Alberni Animal Control Service Changes

February 27, 2026

Following the decision of the City of Port Alberni, the BC SPCA will no longer provide animal control services to the Port Alberni community as of March 1, 2026.

Starting March 1, 2026, members of the public should check the City of Port Alberni website for:

  • Assistance with stray animals
  • Concerns about dangerous or noisy animals
  • Dog licensing

The BC SPCA will continue to provide the following services to the City of Port Alberni residents:

  • Accepting owner-surrendered animals
  • Animal adoptions
  • Emergency Support Services and outreach support for the community
  • Compassionate and emergency boarding for animals
  • Concerns about abuse or cruelty to animals
  • Humane education programs in the community

“The BC SPCA has been offering its services in the City of Port Alberni since 1961, and animal control services for decades,” said Leon Davis, regional manager, Islands/Sunshine Coast, BC SPCA. “Being part of the Alberni-Clayoquot community, the BC SPCA will continue its vital work so animals and people thrive together.”
