The start of a New Year is the perfect time to take inventory on how you and your pet are enjoying life together and setting some new goals. Not only will your pet benefit but you will too. More exercise for your dog equals more exercise for you!
Switch it up.
Dogs love exploring new environments. It provides them with essential mental enrichment, and it is good for humans too! So, even if you and your dog have some favourite dog-friendly trails and parks you love to visit, why not try some new places in 2026. Or if you are walking your dog in your neighbourhood, discover a new route to walk. And when you are on your walks, let your dog indulge in all the sniffing they want. There is nothing like a “sniffari” to make for a happy and tired pup! Cat guardians can consider giving your cat a window perch or build them a catio to increase their mental enrichment.

Try training your cat to walk on a leash.
Why should dogs have all the fun? Has your cat shown an interest in the outdoors, is confident and curious? They might be the perfect candidate for leash training. Cats can learn to walk on a leash; start practising in your home taking it slowly then allowing your cat time to adjust at their own pace. Once they’re confident take them outside to a quiet, controlled environment like a yard or balcony. When they’re confident, they can explore the great outdoors right alongside you! Some cats even become enthusiastic little hikers.

Giving more focus and attention to your pet.
Has your dog or cat ever pawed the phone away from you? Cats and dogs love spending time with you and just like your human friends and family, if you are constantly looking at your phone or distracted in other ways, it can make them feel ignored. Not only will more focus and attention improve the connection between you and your pet, it can also help keep them safe. If you aren’t giving your full attention to your dog and the dogs around them at a dog park or on the street, you can miss cues that your dog is feeling uncomfortable or others are stressed.

Brushing your dog or cat’s teeth.
If you aren’t doing it already, make that a goal in 2026, but go slow until your pet is used to it and use a toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush specifically made for cats and dogs. Although daily tooth brushing is recommended, if you can’t do it every day, try every other day! This simple task has many benefits including reducing the risk of periodontal disease and the need for professional dental cleanings which require sedation.
Regular vet check-ups.
An annual wellness exam can catch any issues with your pet’s health early before it becomes something far more devastating and expensive.
Ensure your pet’s permanent ID is registered and the contact information is up to date.
Just because your pet has a microchip or tattoo doesn’t mean it is registered. Start the New Year with peace of mind that, if your pet ever goes missing you’ve taken every step possible to help bring them safely back home.
