Sweetie is a six-year-old Shih Tzu, surrendered to the BC SPCA by her guardian who was no longer able to provide the care she needs.
“We are so grateful to Sweetie’s guardian for making the incredibly difficult decision to surrender Sweetie to the BC SPCA’s care,” says Angela Mather, manager of the BC SPCA’s East Kootenay animal centre. “Unfortunately, sometimes when you’re managing your own ongoing medical needs, it can be really hard to keep providing the care your pet needs from you and supporting their health care issues too.”
Sweetie was seen by a veterinarian the next day. She had an x-ray where it was discovered she had bladder stones and was immediately booked for surgery – ten stones were removed. She also requires surgery for cherry eye and her assessment has indicated she will require dental surgery as well.
Mather adds that Sweetie will need to be on a urinary tract health diet for the rest of her life to prevent the bladder stones from returning. “Sweetie is such a lovely little dog. She really lives up to her name and is a total sweetheart. She is quiet, patient and has been affectionate with everyone she meets.”
Sweetie is currently recovering with one of the BC SPCA’s fosters. She will be available for adoption in approximately one week.
