In 2021, British Columbia made history by becoming the first Canadian province to ban mink farming. However, fur farming of chinchillas, minks, foxes, and wolves remains legal in other provinces across Canada. Now, a federal petition has been launched calling for a national ban on fur farming all species of animals and is open until January 27th. Please sign the petition now!
Why we must end fur farming
- Animal welfare concerns: Wild animals have complex needs that cannot be met on fur farms. These are not domesticated animals but wild animals born into unnatural and inhumane conditions.
- Public health risks: Fur farms are transmission grounds for dangerous infectious diseases, including Avian influenza (H5N1) and COVID-19. These outbreaks pose serious risks to surrounding communities.
- Public opinion: An overwhelming 78% of Canadians oppose farming animals for fur, demonstrating widespread support for ending this practice.1
- Respect for Indigenous values: Fur farming conflicts with Indigenous perspectives on animal treatment and environmental stewardship.
- Cost to taxpayers: The Fur-Bearers obtained documents showing that the Canadian government has given fur farms over $27 million in loans to prop up an industry facing a sharp decline in demand and increasing public scrutiny.
Take action: sign the petition by January 27th
