Animal cruelty charges laid in Elkford dog shootings

September 11, 2015

Crown counsel has approved animal cruelty charges against Elkford, B.C. resident James Nelson Bonnell following a BC SPCA investigation into the shooting deaths of two dogs in May.

Bonnell is charged with four counts under the Criminal Code of Canada in the deaths of a two-year-old female Labrador-cross and an eight-year-old female Rottweiler/shepherd cross. Bonnell shot the dogs on May 1, 2015 after they gained entry onto his property and killed several of his chickens.  Witnesses saw Bonnell put the dogs into his truck and drive them out of town, where they were fatally shot.

“After a very thorough investigation, the BC SPCA was able to gather sufficient evidence to support recommending criminal code charges in this case,” said BC SPCA special constable Jeremy Irons. “We feel the evidence contradicts the assertion that these dogs were killed with ‘lawful excuse’, the defence provision provided under the criminal code.”

Bonnell’s first court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 1 at the Sparwood Courthouse.
