5 Things You Didn’t Know About Guinea Pigs: Celebrating National Adopt a Guinea Pig Month

March 7, 2025

At the BC SPCA, we’re passionate about helping all animals find loving homes. With March being National Adopt a Guinea Pig Month, there’s no better time to shine a spotlight on these charming creatures. Guinea pigs, also known as the cavy, are often overlooked as pets but have so much to offer. Read on for five surprising facts about guinea pigs that may inspire you to adopt one of these delightful animals this month!

1. They Are Not Pigs At All

Despite their name, guinea pigs are not related to pigs, nor do they originate from Guinea! These delightful rodents belong to the family Caviidae and are closely related to capybaras. Native to the Andes Mountains in South America, they were domesticated over 3,000 years ago. Understanding their true background can deepen your appreciation for these unique pets.

2. They Communicate in Unique Ways

Guinea pigs make a lot of noise! They use a lot of sounds to express their emotions. For example, a high-pitched “wheek” often means they’re excited about food, while soft purrs show contentment. By learning their language, you can strengthen your bond and better meet their needs. Imagine the joy of understanding your furry friend’s emotions!

3. They Have a Complex Social Structure

Guinea pigs are naturally social animals. In the wild, they live in herds for protection and companionship. Because of this, it’s essential to keep at least two guinea pigs together. They set up friendships and hierarchies, providing each other with social support. When you adopt, consider welcoming an established pair to ensure they thrive.

4. They Have Unique Dietary Needs

These little furballs require a special diet to stay healthy. Unlike other rodents, guinea pigs cannot produce vitamin C on their own, so fresh veggies like bell peppers and leafy greens are vital. A diet rich in hay and specially formulated pellets keeps their digestive system healthy. Additionally, guinea pigs help you eat a healthy and veggie-rich diet and love to share some (guinea pig safe) veggie scraps from your meal. Understanding their nutritional needs is key to a long and happy life—something every guinea pig deserves!

5. They Live for 5-7 Years

Many people don’t realize that guinea pigs can live 5 to 7 years, and sometimes even longer with proper care. Providing them with a nurturing environment, regular veterinary check-ups, and plenty of love can help them thrive for years to come. When you adopt from the BC SPCA, you’re not just giving a pet a home; you’re making a long-term commitment.

Why Adoption Matters

Choosing to adopt guinea pigs can change lives! Shelters often have many guinea pigs in need of loving homes. By adopting, you’re not only providing a home for animals in need, but you’re also gaining incredible companions who will bring joy to your life.

With March being National Adopt a Guinea Pig Month, it’s the perfect time to visit your local BC SPCA Community Animal Centre and consider bringing one of these amazing pets into your home. Our team is dedicated to educating potential pet guardians about the needs of guinea pigs, ensuring they go to the best possible homes. Your new furry friend is waiting!
