The BC SPCA is caring for 10 cats that were found abandoned on the side of the road in 70 Mile House on Thanksgiving long weekend.
“While driving through 70 Mile House on her way home to Vancouver, a woman observed a small canvas pet carrier at the side of the road in a truck pullout,” says Jodi Dunlop manager of the BC SPCA’s Vancouver animal centre. “She pulled over and was shocked to discover 10 cats including a mom and her five kittens and a pregnant cat in the carrier.”
Dunlop adds that the finder immediately called her husband who then called the BC SPCA’s animal helpline. “I was contacted by the helpline on the weekend. At the time we didn’t know where the cats had been found only that they were on their way to Vancouver. We started to prepare for the cats to come into our care,” says Dunlop. “The finder later informed us that she would be arriving in Vancouver very late on Monday, too late for us to bring them into the animal centre, so they stayed overnight in her home, and she brought them in the next day.” The cats were checked for identification (there was none) and given a full veterinary examination.
“Thankfully, the cats are all healthy,” says Dunlop. “The nursing mom and her kittens were placed in a foster home the day after their arrival. We were able to find another foster home for the pregnant cat a few days later. She gave birth to five kittens the day she arrived. This kind woman saved more than 10 cats, she saved 15!”
The BC SPCA reminds people that it is an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, as well as the Criminal Code of Canada to abandon an animal. If anyone is struggling, please reach out to the BC SPCA’s Animal Helpline 1-855-622-7722.
Some of the cats are currently available for adoption. Please check the BC SPCA’s adoption page if you are interested in giving them a forever home.
