Celebrating the “paw-sitive” impact of BC SPCA volunteers

April 11, 2024

During National Volunteer Week, April 14 through 20, the BC SPCA recognizes the contributions of the 3,479 committed, talented and generous volunteers who dedicate their time and talents to enrich the lives of B.C.’s most vulnerable animals in our animal centres and communities.

“Every moment our volunteers contribute matters to an animal in need,” says Craig Daniell, chief executive officer of the BC SPCA, “from the time they spend socializing a foster animal or transporting injured wildlife to our rehab centre to the pet food and supplies they distribute to vulnerable families, it all makes a huge difference to the animals in our care and the work we do.”

Simply put, volunteers play a crucial role in helping the BC SPCA realize their mission. In 2023, volunteers contributed more than 224,000 hours of service and made a positive impact on the lives of 135,764 domestic, farm and wild animals in B.C.

BC SPCA volunteers enrich and strengthen our organization by bringing their unique perspectives and experience to all aspects of our work, from direct animal care to governance and communications.

They also play a vital role in our emergency response efforts during wildfire season by providing temporary homes for evacuated pets and peace of mind for their families.

“This year, we are celebrating a return to pre-pandemic engagement, and we are continually being reminded how volunteers enhance our organization in myriad ways,” says Daniell. “We couldn’t do this work without our volunteers, and we hope each individual knows how much we appreciate their efforts and sees the impact of their contributions to at-risk animals.”
