Back in November, a desperate call came in from a concerned animal guardian with a tiny litter of puppies in crisis. Their sheltie had given birth to 11 puppies after an unplanned litter, but she wasn’t taking to her new role as a mom. It’s not always easy to understand how a dog can reject her puppies, but this girl was struggling to give her newborns the loving support and comfort they needed in the critical first day of life. Devastatingly many of them passed away overnight. By the time the remaining 5 puppies arrived to the BC SPCA, they were barely clinging to life. Tiny and fragile, a newborn puppy is wholly dependent on warmth, frequent feedings, grooming, and stimulation to survive.
We are very fortunate to have a fantastic network of foster volunteers ready to step up at a moment’s notice. Within a few hours a highly experienced foster family had their house set up, hot water bottles ready, and were waiting for the puppies at the animal centre by the time they arrived. When taking in such a young litter the foster family becomes the puppies’ whole world: waking through the night to warm a tiny body with a soft towel and a careful heat source, holding a teacup‑sized bottle to a searching mouth until milk fills their bellies, and then gently rubbing the pup to help them relieve themselves when they can’t do it alone.
Heartbreakingly, most of this group developed fading puppy syndrome. They were too weak to eat, and despite round-the-clock care, at just a few days old all but one crossed the rainbow bridge.
Only Brielle remained.
Brielle, the sole survivor, was tiny and fragile but fought fiercely to live. It was as if she knew she carried the legacy of her ten siblings in her heart. Her foster family meticulously poured all their love and devotion into caring for Brielle. Feeding her every four hours (including throughout the night), weighing her before and after each meal, and logging each stool or tiny milestone to report back to her BC SPCA care team.
To give this little fighter the best start beyond food and warmth, they began short daily stimulation sessions: 45 seconds of gentle exercises that held her upright, tipped her head down, rolled her briefly onto her back, rubbed each paw with a cotton swab, and even placed her on a cool surface for a few seconds. These mimic natural handling and sensory experiences neonate puppies would get from their mother and littermates, and they help jump‑start neurological, respiratory and motor development. They also introduced Brielle to new scents (like coffee grounds) presented in tiny jars so her little brain could learn and develop. Aware that early life stress can leave lasting marks, Brielle’s loving fosters focused on steady, soothing handling and lots of positive experiences to help her build trust, resilience, and the strongest chance of a healthy, confident life.
Week by week, Brielle began showing promise! She opened her eyes for the first time to an excited hooman, was introduced to mush (ground kibble soaked with puppy formula) as a way to slowly ween her towards solids, and started showing playfulness after her meal times as she grew stronger.
After two months of experienced care with her fantastic foster family, Brielle was finally ready for her next chapter in life. A miracle pup with bundles of love to gift to her forever family!
As she awaits her spay appointment, Brielle is already thriving in the loving home where she will be cherished for the rest of her years! She has grown from a small, helpless nugget to a strong and confident young pup, full of curiosity and lust for life. Her new family’s hearts have been stolen by Brielle’s playful joy. It’s clear this girl is smart, and she’s already mastered “sit”, “touch”, “down” and “drop” and knows how to ask to go potty outside. Freeze‑dried chicken is her favourite reward and treats definitely make learning new skills fast and fun.
Brielle’s story is a testament to what steady hands, sleepless nights, and unwavering compassion can achieve. Her rambunctious and joyful character were carefully nurtured by her dedicated foster family and. We’re excited to follow Brielle’s story as she becomes the perfect doggo companion she was always meant to be!
