Update: Kitten attacked by dog finds home for the holidays!

December 6, 2024

The signs were everywhere. Mike Wazowski, now named Uno, was destined to be with his forever family. And he was meant to make their new house a home, just in time for the holidays.

Ashley remembers when she first saw Uno, although she didn’t know it at the time. She was standing in front of a bakery beside a veterinary clinic when she saw people rush an animal in for care. She had no idea it was a 10-week-old kitten who had been attacked by a dog and needed emergency surgery.

“Later that night we were at housewarming party. It was being hosted by the veterinarian who had operated on Uno that morning,” says Ashley. “What were the odds? We met her and mentioned that we really wanted to adopt a cat,” says Ashley. “The vet asked if we would be interested in being a foster to a 10-week-old kitten who needed a home to stay in while he recovered.”

Ashley and her partner were immediately interested and reached out to the BC SPCA. They were approved to foster Uno, and the little kitten was soon in their home. “Uno warmed up to us right away,” says Ashley. “We were worried he might hide from us because of everything he had been through, but from day one, he was giving us ‘this is my home’ energy.”  And it was his home. Ashley soon realized that this foster was going to be a fail.

Uno loved the fact that his mom worked from home. “He just had to see everything that was happening on my laptop,” says Ashley. “When we first got him, he was so small he would curl up on my shoulder when I was working, but now that he is grown, he curls up on my chest.”

Ashley adds that Uno is so much fun to have around. “Now that we have had him for a month, we are really getting to know his personality,” says Ashley. “He has lots to say and is affectionate, but very independent.”

He has certainly changed since he first arrived. “Uno used to love to sleep all night curled up on the bed with us, but now he has gotten a little older, he is a little braver and sleeps in his cat tree in the living room,” says Ashley. “He does visit us at 6 am every morning to sit on our pillows and patiently wait for us to wake up so he can get his cuddles.”

When it comes to toys, Uno has a favourite. “Gavin, my partner, is a fisherman and got Uno a fishing rod cat toy with a plush fish attached to the end of the line,” says Ashley. “Uno is completely obsessed. We are getting him a bunch of different plush toys that we can change up on the rod for Christmas.”

Uno has shown a real love for the holidays. “He is very curious about the Christmas tree. We made it very safe and stable, just in case he tries to climb it,” says Ashley. “He is also very interested in the paper snowflakes we have hung up in the window.”

Ashley adds, “Uno has really made our house a home. We just moved here when we got him, and we were missing our family and friends,” says Ashley. “But fostering and now adopting Uno has made us feel like we are part of the community. We can’t wait to introduce him to our family and friends when they come to visit.”

Kitten attacked by dog has eye surgically removed

Original date: November 7, 2024

A 10-week-old kitten, named Mike Wazowski by BC SPCA staff, was attacked by a dog. He was brought to a veterinary clinic on the Sunshine Coast and surrendered by the owner who could not afford the veterinary costs to treat the kitten’s injuries.

“The veterinary clinic contacted us to see if we could take the kitten into our care,” says Marika Donnelly, manager of the BC SPCA’s Sunshine Coast community animal centre, “We agreed to cover all of the costs to treat this little one.”

Based on the injuries, the veterinarian believes the kitten was most likely grabbed and shaken by the dog who attacked him and that is what caused the kitten’s eye to come out of the socket. “The damage was so severe it was not repairable,” says Donnelly. “The eye had to be surgically removed.” Thankfully, there was no other physical damage, except for some facial swelling and bruising.

“Mike is the sweetest kitten,” she says. “Even though he has been through so much, he’s friendly and social, just like any other kitten. He has the loudest purr and loves to spend time with the staff and volunteers at the centre.”

Mike will be available for adoption in approximately three weeks.
