AnimalKind is a BC SPCA program that helps dog guardians find skilled dog trainers who use science-based, positive reinforcement methods. Earning accreditation means a business has been thoroughly audited and meets high standards of animal welfare.

For Westfall, the journey to becoming a dog trainer began while running a dog-walking business. “I realized how many dogs struggle to walk on leash and how many guardians feel unprepared to manage their behaviour,” Westfall says. “By teaching dogs a few basic skills, the walk becomes so much more enjoyable for everyone.”

Through Epsilon Dog Training, Westfall now helps clients shift their perspective on dog behaviour. “I had a mindset shift a while ago after my dog had surgery. I saw how vulnerable he was and how much he depended on me to care for him. I choose to train with positive reinforcement-based methods simply because it is the right thing to do: Treating dogs kindly, rewarding them, and meeting their needs unconditionally.”

Westfall says AnimalKind provides a trustworthy resource for pet guardians. “Currently, the dog training market is buyer-beware, which unfortunately results in a lot of people wasting their money and a lot of dogs being treated poorly. The AnimalKind accreditation is like a seal of approval that shows a trainer has been vetted by a reputable third-party organization.”

Nicole Fenwick, manager, research and standards for the BC SPCA, says, “AnimalKind was developed to help guardians feel confident they are choosing humane trainers in an unregulated industry. All AnimalKind accredited trainers use methods that are backed by science and strengthen the bond between a dog and their guardian. Based on the existing evidence, there is no reason to use outdated dominance-based techniques.”
