BC SPCA Spring Lottery winner bought ticket in honour of beloved Newfie: Now she can give another a home!

August 8, 2025

In a touching tale of deep love for animals, heartbreaking loss, and new beginnings, this year’s Spring Lottery 50/50 winner shares how a ticket bought in honour of her beloved Newfie has changed her path. This is an inspiring story about the power of the human-animal bond.

When we recently caught up with Shannon, the lucky ticket holder, she was still in disbelief. “The cheque is in my bank, but the reality has not even started to sink in. I’m still sobbing and laughing every time I remember that I won.” She shared, “I am a Metis woman and a third generation Newfoundland owner. In my culture dogs are considered family and Luna was my primary attachment in life.

Sadly, Shannon recently experienced the day every animal lover fears. The heartbreaking loss of her beloved Luna. She was everything to Shannon, bringing joy and comfort to her life every day for 11 years.

Luna was so much more than a pet. As a teacher, Shannon would tell the students stories of Luna’s antics and would bring Luna to meet her students. This big floofy girl (they called her a ‘fluffy potato’) became a local celebrity among students! They adored her and created countless drawings and stories in her honour.

Luna’s legacy extended beyond the classroom; as a puppy she regularly visited patients in the chemotherapy ward while Shannon’s lovingly nicknamed “Faux-Pa” was receiving treatment. She would also do the rounds at care homes when Shannon would visit her grandparents. She brought comfort to all those around her, spreading love and warmth wherever she went.

After Luna’s passing in February, Shannon found herself grappling with grief and the emotional void left by her loyal companion. She told us, “I am still grieving deeply and am in counseling to come to terms with having to say goodbye, and with losing her physical and emotional support.” The bond they shared was profound, and the memories of their daily walks and weekend adventures hiking and swimming lingered in her heart.

Reflecting on her journey with Luna, Shannon recounted the challenges they faced together, including significant veterinary expenses due to allergies and various joint issues. “I sacrificed everything for her, but I always promised Luna I would make sure she got the healthcare she needed” Shannon shared. “I would never let her live in pain. My greatest fear was the possibility of not being able to financially cover the care and medications needed to keep her well.” This dedication inspired Shannon to purchase BC SPCA lottery tickets in Luna’s honour, helping other animals in need while keeping her beloved pet’s memory alive.

When the call came, Shannon found it hard to process her win. It was all “too surreal” she mentioned.

Winning the lottery has opened new doors for Shannon, allowing her to consider adopting another Newfoundland to fill the Luna-shaped hole in her heart. “I know this money is life-changing; I can travel, renovate my home, and invest in my retirement,” she said. However, the most significant impact of her win is the ability to welcome a rescue dog into her life without the fear of financial burden. “My Luna set me up so that I will never have to worry about choosing between money and caring for someone I love,” she expressed.

As Shannon embarks on this new chapter, she is actively reaching out to rescue organizations across Canada, eager to find her next furry companion. Her story is a beautiful reminder of the power of the love we share with the animals in our lives.
