BC SPCA awards Penticton dog trainer with AnimalKind accreditation

May 28, 2025

I Heart Canine PR is the latest dog training business to be accredited by the BC SPCA’s AnimalKind program, which recognizes companies that use science-based training methods and are committed to high dog welfare.

“We are excited to welcome I Heart Canine PR to our AnimalKind community of accredited dog trainers,” says Nicole Fenwick, manager, research and standards for the BC SPCA. “Our program helps dog guardians identify trainers who use humane methods, which have been proven to be better for dogs.”

Chelene Bogan, owner and trainer at I Heart Canine PR, has always had a deep love for animals, but it was adopting her Staffy-Heeler mix that transformed her understanding of the human-dog bond.

“My dog struggled with reactivity and fear of new situations, which inspired me to learn more so I could support her better,” says Bogan. This personal experience had an impact on Bogan. “Positive reinforcement is a powerful, science-backed approach that supports the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of dogs. Seeing my dogs make progress through kind and respectful training methods has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”

Bogan’s approach focuses on behaviour, not just in dogs but also in the people who love them. “I help guardians understand why their dog may be behaving a certain way, whether it’s rooted in instinct, learned experiences, genetics, or trauma,” explains Bogan. My goal is to prevent rehoming or frustration over behaviours that are actually very fixable with the right support.”

“AnimalKind wants to encourage dog guardians to choose trainers who work with them and their dogs with methods that strengthen the bond between them, and Chelene is a great addition to the program,” says Fenwick.

For Bogan, the BC SPCA’s accreditation provides professional validation. “AnimalKind is the only program I’ve found that is entirely dedicated to positive reinforcement,” says Bogan. “Being part of a trusted, science-based accreditation helps me reassure guardians that the methods I use are not only ethical, but effective and evidence-based.”
