Every animal who enters the care of the BC SPCA arrives with a story, and some stories begin with hardship. When Gus, originally named Balto, first came in, he carried the weight of a difficult past. At approximately six years old, he had already lived through more than any dog should have to face. And yet, even with all he had endured, there was a gentleness in his eyes that suggested he hadn’t given up on people. This sweet boy quickly became a staff favorite, and our Vancouver Animal Centre worked tirelessly to help this old soul find a kind second chance.

A Video, a Spark, and a Saturday Morning Road Trip
Gus was posted to the BC SPCA’s provincial social media over three times in hopes of finding him the perfect home. He spent over 50 days in care, hoping that the right person would see his video, which garnered over 300,000 views across social media platforms and touched many hearts. One serendipitous day, his video came on to Cassandra’s husband, Jarrett’s, ‘for you’ page.
“My husband sent it to me on Friday,” Cassandra recalls. “He said, ‘We need to go tomorrow. We must go see him.”
The next morning, they packed their two kids into the car in Maple Ridge and made the drive to Vancouver.
This family was already experienced in opening their hearts to animals. They’ve fostered more than 60 dogs over the past decade, and their home has always been filled with the pitter-patter of smaller companions. After heartbreakingly losing two beloved seniors this past year, they were still healing. They had even been days away from adopting a large dog recently, a plan that fell through at the last minute.
Then they saw Gus.
Quiet. Gentle. A little worn from his past, but still hopeful. A six-year-old dog with the softest soul and the sweetest peppered face.

Was it love at first sight?
“Yes — truly.”
Thanks to a foster-to-adopt arrangement, they were able to bring Gus home that very day. “My husband and Gus formed a strong bond right away,” his guardian shared. “And I was quick to follow. It just felt right.”
Sometimes a dog walks into your life and fills a space you didn’t know was empty. Gus was that dog.
Finding Peace at Last
For a dog with such a difficult start, Gus’s transition into home life was astonishingly smooth.
“He adjusted almost instantly,” they told us. He was house-trained, easygoing around their other dogs, gentle with their children, and wonderfully calm. But what stood out most was his joy.
“He was just… happy. Happy to lounge on the couch. Happy to get cuddles. Happy to be fed. Happy to have a yard. Happy to play. There was this sense of contentment — like he knew he was home.”
His new guardians credit the care he received at the BC SPCA to help him reach this moment. “You got him healthy and ready for this next chapter, and we’re so grateful.”
A New Name for a New Life
This sweet, older gentleman now goes by Gus, named after the round, lovable mouse from Cinderella. And the name is a perfect match.
He still treasures his favorite toy from his time at the Vancouver Animal Centre and carries it proudly around the house. He adores belly rubs and mealtimes. He suckles on a blanket as he falls asleep, a tender quirk that melts his family’s hearts. And yes, at six years old and newly discovered countertops, he’s keeping everyone on their toes in the most charming way.
His guardian laughed as she shared: “We’re also adjusting to his size; we’ve had a few things mysteriously disappear from the counters!”
Gus may be a senior, but he is living proof that older dogs still have so much love, joy, and personality to give.

“We all adore him. Truly.”
It’s clear that Gus has firmly found a place in the hearts of his new family. It’s exactly what this boy deserved! “Thank you for everything you did for him, and for trusting us with such a special boy” shared Cassandra. There is no doubt Gus has found his people.
For dogs like Gus, love can transform a life, no matter their age. And for families like his, opening their home to an older dog can be just as rewarding.
Here’s to Gus’ next chapter!
