BC SPCA seeks public assistance to identify dog found abandoned, injured in Port Alberni

January 27, 2026

Warning: some readers might find this content distressing.

On January 16, BC SPCA Alberni-Clayoquot received a call from a concerned community member who found a black lab cross type dog with severe injuries tied to a trailer in his yard. He appeared to have wounds on his head and mouth. The team rushed to rescue the dog and transported him to the nearest veterinarian clinic for urgent medical care.

The veterinary team at the clinic cleaned his wounds and offered medication to help manage his pain. After further examination, it was discovered that the dog’s injuries were far worse than initially thought. He was suffering from a broken jaw, several skull fractures, internal bleeding, and infection. Despite extensive care from the medical team and the BC SPCA staff, the dog’s condition worsened. Due to the severity of his injuries and his poor prognosis, the veterinarian recommended humane euthanasia to relieve his suffering.

The dog is described as a black lab cross type, weighing approximately 27 kg (60 lbs.), with a small white patch on his chest and a small amount of white on his back right toes.  He did not have tags or any form of permanent identification like a microchip or a tattoo, and was found on Bruce Street, in Port Alberni’s Southport neighborhood.

The BC SPCA is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the dog and/or the dog’s owner. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the BC SPCA Animal Helpline: 1-855-622-7722, open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days per week.

The BC SPCA wants to thank the community member for reaching out to get this dog help, and the neighbors for their cooperation in the ongoing investigation.
