This Volunteer Week, the BC SPCA is proud to celebrate the outstanding contributions of our dedicated volunteer team members across the province. Whether they’re providing hands-on care to animals, sharing stories, or supporting outreach efforts, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their compassion, commitment, and selfless dedication make our work possible—and make a lasting difference in the lives of both animals and people across British Columbia.
This week is National Volunteer Week in Canada and the 2025 theme is #VolunteersMakeWaves. Volunteer Canada says: “Building on the tides sent out before us, waves swell with each generation of volunteers. Our actions ripple out to broader community benefits, like improved well-being, increased social cohesion, and enhanced resilience in the face of change and uncertainty.”
Each BC SPCA department, program, community location, and animal centre that involves volunteers is organizing activities and initiatives to show appreciation for their passion, dedication, and contributions.
Rosann: Eighteen Years of Loyalty and Leashes
At the BC SPCA Burnaby Animal Centre, Rosann has been showing up, rain or shine, for the past 18 years. She’s not just walking dogs—she’s walking with purpose.
Her journey with the BC SPCA started after witnessing the heartbreaking conditions of animals while traveling in Asia. That experience lit a fire in her, and she hasn’t looked back since. One of her two beloved dogs was adopted right from the Burnaby animal centre—proof that the connection she fosters goes both ways.
Rosann’s typical volunteer shift is a flurry of movement: coordinating with staff, walking dogs, and making sure each animal gets not just exercise, but the gift of choice. “I let them lead the way,” she says. “For dogs who spend so much time in kennels, that sense of freedom is everything.”
Eighteen years brings perspective, and Rosann has seen the work evolve. “Back then, there were more animals—but now, the cases are more complex, especially since the pandemic. It’s tough, but the wins are worth it.”
Rosann’s commitment, even through the emotional ups and downs, is a reminder of what long-term compassion looks like. Her steady presence has helped hundreds of animals—and inspired countless humans along the way.
Andrea: From Swiss Science Teacher to Wildlife Rehabilitator
Over at Wild ARC, the BC SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre, spring brought a new face with a fresh perspective. Andrea, a high school biology and chemistry teacher from Switzerland, joined the team for a six-week stint through the Internex program.
Craving something hands-on and deeply meaningful, Andrea dove headfirst into wildlife rehab. From cleaning enclosures and feeding patients to caring for a beaver and a goose, she embraced every task with curiosity and care.
“It’s completely different from what I do at home,” Andrea says. “I’ve learned so much, and the chance to be this close to wild animals is something I’ll never forget.”
But what stood out to her most? “The people,” she says. “Everyone is incredibly kind and supportive. I felt welcome from day one.”
Andrea’s story is a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone—and how far a little courage and compassion can go.
Vernon’s Unsung Heroes
In Vernon, two standout volunteers are proving that dedication doesn’t always come with a spotlight—but it always makes an impact.
One has been a part of our Humane Education programs since 2017, contributing over 218 hours to community events, microchip clinics, and foodbank deliveries. Her calm presence and can-do attitude have made her a go-to support at almost every local event.
Meanwhile, another Vernon volunteer has logged 689 hours since 2016—and he’s not slowing down. Always ready to drive animals or supplies wherever they’re needed, he’s often the first to show up and the last to leave. No task is too big or too small—he’s there because he believes in what we do.
Their quiet commitment helps make the BC SPCA’s work possible, day in and day out.
A Heartfelt Thank You
BC SPCA volunteers, regardless of role, all help to amplify our impact and improve the lives of animals in BC. Together, they create ripples of impact on people and communities across the province.
