A new community-based services model is now in place to support Nelson and surrounding areas, following the closure of the Nelson BC SPCA Adoption Centre on November 10, 2024. 

We will continue to offer programs and services including animal protection investigations, outreach services like the pet food bank and social change Nelson, led by our Community Services Coordinator, Kristine Graham. For more details, visit here. 

Visit our West Kootenay location in Castlegar or our East Kootenay location in Cranbrook for sheltering, surrendering animals, strays and adoption.

Adoption fees*

*Fees vary by location and are subject to change without notice. Adoption fees are subject to PST (Provincial Sales Tax), which will be added at the time of adoption. All BC SPCA cat/kitten/dog/puppy/rabbit adoptions include a microchip and lifetime registration with the BC Pet Registry. Registration for lifetime protection is $45 for cats/kittens/dogs/puppies and $11.25 for rabbits, which will be added to the adoption fee. For more information please visit bcpetregistry.ca

Nelson Community Services

  • Animal Helpline: 1-855-622-7722
    The Animal Helpline is available from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., seven days per week (closed on Statutory holidays) to answer questions about BC SPCA services in the community, address animal care concerns and accept reports of animals in distress, and to help with next steps for lost/found animals in the community.

 

  • Animal Adoption: Are you looking to add a new member to the family? Visit the BC SPCA’s adoption site to see the adoptable animals available in your area. Community members interested in adding a new member to their family are encouraged to start here to see the adoptable animals in the Kootenays-area.

 

  • Animal Protection Services: Animal Protection Officers serve the Kootenays as part of the BC SPCA’s provincial Animal Protection work. Anyone who has animal welfare concerns or wants to report an animal in distress should contact the BC SPCA’s Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722.

 

 

  • Pet food bank programs: Animal guardians in need of pet food or supplies are able to access support through a number of our pet food bank partners in Nelson including the Salvation Army, Good Food Bank, Kaslo Food Hub, Salmo Community Services Food Bank.

 

  • Animal Surrender: If you need assistance rehoming your animal, look into these alternatives to giving up your pet. If you don’t see advice on your specific situation, please contact the BC SPCA’s Animal Helpline at 1-855-622-7722 to discuss your specific situation and for more information on the next steps.

 

  • Volunteering opportunities: We are actively recruiting volunteer foster homes in the Nelson region, along with the addition of two new volunteer opportunities: animal and supplies drivers and BC SPCA ambassadors. Anyone interested in volunteering with the BC SPCA should visit the volunteer opportunities page.

The BC SPCA operate 31 community animal care centres, two education & adoption centres, three barns, two veterinary hospitals, two spay neuter clinics and Wild ARC, a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Metchosin on Vancouver Island. In addition, we provide provincial services such as animal protection investigations, and community services such as pet food bank in many communities. Whether you are looking to adopt a new furry friend into your family or would like to know more about how you can make difference for animals in our community, we are here to help. The BC SPCA is a not-for-profit organization which relies primarily on community donations to help animals in need. Please join us in the fight against animal cruelty!
