While kittens and younger cats are widely popular when it comes to adoption, our senior feline friends deserve just as much attention.
Senior cats have so much to offer in the way of love, affection and appreciation for their new guardians.
Anne and her husband were pleasantly surprised to discover this when they adopted 12-year-old Mickey from the BC SPCA Kelowna Community Animal Centre in December 2020.
Over the past year, Mickey has settled in just fine; actually, he loves to survey his kingdom from the top of his cat tree and claim his rightful place in the laps of his humans.
Now, Anne has written to us with an update on their lives with Mickey:
“It has been a year since we adopted the most wonderful senior cat, Mickey Blue Eyes, from the BC SPCA Kelowna Community Animal Centre on December 23, 2020.
Mickey is now 13 years old. Although he has some medical issues, he is a happy, loving and super cuddly companion. My husband says that Mickey is the ‘best used cat ever’.
Mickey behaves more like a dog when he comes running to the door to greet us as we arrive home. He loves to be with us, snuggling on our laps or sleeping under the blanket for nap time. Mickey is easy going and he adjusted very quickly to his new home.
We call Mickey the ‘Royal Kitty’ because he really is so regal looking. One of his favourite places to hang out is in his ‘castle’—his kitty condo placed by the window. Although he doesn’t run around much, he is still very agile and likes to play when the mood hits him.
We really lucked out in adopting Mickey. He has added so much joy and love to our lives this past year. Although we won’t have him in our lives for as long as we would have with a younger cat, we are so glad that we have him in his senior years.
We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend adopting a senior animal. If Mickey is any example, they have tons of love to give. He brings us joy us every day.”
