There is no denying it when you feel connected to your new feline companion.
When Zoe and her boyfriend met Toby, a young feral kitten, at the BC SPCA Kelowna Community Animal Centre in August 2024, they may all have been a little nervous that surface-level superficialities would put off the other party.
However, after being in one another’s company, it was clear this trio was meant to be.
Now, several months later, Toby is loving life with his new guardians. Zoe has written to us to share their story:
“We adopted Toby back in August 2024. My boyfriend and I had just moved to Kelowna from the States for university and we were both really nervous about living in a new country.
The first week we moved here, we went to the BC SPCA Kelowna Community Animal Centre as we were thinking about adopting a cat to keep us company. At the time, I had a sprained ankle and I was really nervous about scaring the cats with my scooter.
The BC SPCA had just rescued a litter of feral kittens. They were all so adorable but super scared. Except for Toby. The whole litter was named after types of tea so he was originally called Yerba Mate.
He was adorable from the beginning. He let us hold him and started purring immediately. He still purrs super loud to this day. He was so curious about us and the knee scooter. He wasn’t scared of us and let us give him treats and play with him. We immediately fell in love with him.
Toby is blind in one eye and considered special needs because of it. The staff told us he received the least amount of interest due to his health issues and that most of his siblings had already been adopted. We picked him up the next day and spent the car ride choosing a name for him. Now, we can’t imagine our lives without him.
Toby is so playful and has such an amazing personality. He’s funny and loves to learn tricks. He likes going on walks and he loves cat TV. We love Toby and we are so grateful to the BC SPCA for finding him for us!”
Thank you, Zoe, to you and your boyfriend for choosing adoption as your first option. Your scooter didn’t stand a chance in scaring off Toby, because it’s clear he felt just as strongly about you. We’re thrilled to hear that Toby leads such a fulfilling life. You have given him a home and environment where he truly feels safe, and he will be forever thankful.
