Four beautiful, eight-week-old pups were surrendered to one of our Animal Protection Officers on May 16, 2023. Little Raine was one of them.
The pups were not being well cared for, so after a health check at the BC SPCA Abbotsford Community Animal Centre they went into foster homes while they completed treatment for parasites and ear and eye infections and then spayed or neutered.
On June 6, 2023, Raine became Skippy Hashbrown Laing when she went home with her delighted furever family, who write us here:
“Our family had just dealt with our family dog dying at the age of 11. His name was Rolly Waffle Laing. He was a Mutt/Beagle/Lab/German Pointer cross and was adopted from the BC SPCA Richmond Education & Adoption Centre.
Our family soon realized the empty hole that was left when he passed away. No one to accompany me as I worked at the computer, went for runs and hikes with the family. It became clear to us that we needed to find another pup from the BC SPCA to join our family.
Ever since our beloved dog passed my daughter had been watching the BC SPCA website, constantly searching for our next furever pup. She was lucky to come across Skippy Hashbrown Laing, a Labrador Retriever/Border Collie cross.
As soon as we saw her on the website, we knew at that moment that she would be the one for us. The next morning we received a call from the BC SPCA saying that they had chosen us to be her furever family. We were overjoyed to have an eight-week-old puppy once again in our family!
In the first few months at home she was fairly fearful of loud noises, new people and her new environment. We have heard that she had been seized which leads us to believe that in her first two months of her life she was scared and learned to be fearful of humans.
Over time she learned to trust us and now is one of the most cuddly pups we could ask for. She is a very smart dog who strives to impress us with her many tricks, including high five, play dead, jump through arms and walk around our kitchen on her two legs while I hold her other two paws.
Furthermore, her favourite job is to go retrieve the mail and trade it in for treats. She also loves circling our fish pond searching for fish whenever she goes outside. We are thrilled she loves going for walks, hikes and camping, as we are a very active family.
Skippy enjoys eating any scraps that fall from the picnic table, chewing sticks and swimming in the lakes and oceans. She is a little social butterfly, meeting the mailman, pancaking on the ground when she sees other dogs, rabbits, squirrels, garbage trucks, delivery trucks and buses.
She recently had her first birthday and her addition to our family has been amazing! Our two teenagers are dedicated to taking her out for walks, caring for her and helping in any way.
She has introduced us to many new people in our neighbourhood and is always there for us if we want to give her a hug or go for a walk. Whenever we come home she comes to say hi to us, and then quickly runs to bring us one of her toys so we can play with her.
We are all so grateful she joined our family and has brought great joy to all of us already! If you want to follow her journey give her a follow on instagram @fearless_skippy!
The BC SPCA is a wonderful organization whose main goal is to protect the lives of animals and make their lives better. Although you may be nervous about adopting a dog that might have once lived on a street, had a difficult beginning or was surrendered by a family that could no longer take care of the animal, all these animals are just looking for a loving home to take them in.
The animal will come to be a part of your family faster than you might have believed. I love being able to adopt a dog from the BC SPCA knowing that I am enriching these animals’ lives every day! When in doubt, adopt from the
BC SPCA!”
That is one lucky pup, your Skippy! It’s clear from the photos and Instagram posts that her life is very enriched with fun and activity and most of all, the love of her human family members. Because you’re right, what companion animals want most is to be safe as a member of a loving family.
Thank you for continuing to adopt from (and advocate for) the BC SPCA. We wish you many more happy, healthy years together with your girl.
