Happy (formerly Potato)

On July 19, 2024, Potato and her sister, Mash, were rescued when a passerby called Animal Control when she saw the two young pups running down a highway. They ended up with us at the BC SPCA South Okanagan/Similkameen Community Animal Centre, then transferred twice before being adopted.

Lucky for them, because these lovely Pit Bull Terriers were not being taken care of, to say the least. The girls were skinny, had inflamed eyes and ears, scars and wounds on their bodies and burns on their paws. It was likely they were being kept to be bred for a little extra pocket money. In fact, at a year old, Potato had already clearly been a mother.

Potato was a super sweet girl who was desperate for all the love and cuddles she could get. She enjoyed telling the staff all about her day with charming little noises like huffs and awhoos. She had lots of energy and her tail never stopped wagging to show her love of life.

Happy was the perfect new name for this girl, given to her by her human match, who showed up on July 16 to take her to her new furever home. Here is Happy’s new happy tale:

“In memory of my previous foster fail, and the ones proceeding the last, I knew I was going to adopt again. I just told myself that I would wait through a mourning period. I quickly came to the conclusion that when it comes to animals, the mourning period for me includes honouring the memories of past pets by providing safety, health and genuine love and compassion to another–a pay-it-forward concept.

Here comes Happy. Initially they called her Potato, then I called her Poppy, however, Happy is a better fit–her and me.

I scan the BC SPCA adoptable animals regularly. When I spotted Potato, I just knew! I was at the kennels before they opened and they graciously allowed me to walk and cuddle her. I knew she was the one, I renamed her Happy, and she came home with me that morning. Thank you to the staff at the BC SPCA East Kootenay Community Animal Centre, they are so lovely.

Happy is the youngest dog I’ve ever cared for. She’s one and a bit. I generally adopt five year olds. So now I’ve pulled out my runners and she has inspired an increased exercise routine with morning runs and long evening walks with the Chuckit. Happy has already inspired me to leave the TV behind and enjoy LIFE!

She is organized with her bathroom habits and toy management. I just love her and my new zest for getting busy with my new Amiga! In the photo at the end here, she just finished taking one toy at a time out in the yard out of the insIde toy box, lol, taking a five-minute rest.”

Awww, what a lovely match the two of you make. The greatest tribute to your previous beloved animal companions is to share that love and devotion with another animal. Which is what you’re doing.

Thank you so much for choosing to adopt. Many Happy years together!
