Tips to be a better animal advocate this election

Animal’s can’t advocate for themselves, but you can.

It’s important for candidates from all parties to hear that voters care about animal welfare and expect them to make Canada a more humane country for all animals if they are elected. You never know who will be elected and who could be a valuable ally for animals.

During their campaigns, you can engage with your candidates by:

  • Having a face-to-face conversation when candidates arrive on your doorstep, or you see them at a community event. Tell them how much animal welfare matters to you.
  • Requesting more information at a candidate debate and ask how they and their party will enhance animal welfare in Canada
  • Sending a personal email or letter about the animal welfare issues that matter to you
  • Messaging them on social media
  • Calling or emailing their constituency office to request a virtual or in-person meeting

Tips for talking to your candidates:

  • Be prepared – read our election issues and think about what’s important to you, why it matters and what you want our next federal government to do about it
  • Get personal – have these issues affected you personally? What about others in your community? Speaking from experience and telling candidates the impact on their voters makes it more meaningful
  • Keep it brief – candidates have a lot of people to talk to and a lot of emails to read before the election. Be direct, tell them what you want them to do and why, share a story and thank them for their time
  • Be polite – even if you don’t agree with a candidate or their party’s position on an issue or their response to a question, be respectful and polite
  • Follow up – ask how they’ll demonstrate their support for animal welfare during and after the election

Your vote is their voice!

Don’t forget to vote! If you’re unsure where and how to vote, please check out Elections Canada for vital information.

The BC SPCA also supports Humane Canada’s election platform which includes more animal welfare issues and asks for the federal election.
