When we are in tune with our canine companions, we can communicate with them and understand their needs on another level.
After spending a couple years with her Husky-German Shepherd mix, Rachel knew the time was right to adopt a sibling for her.
Upon visiting the BC SPCA North Cariboo Community Animal Centre in April 2024, Rachel met and fell in love with Oliver, a young friendly boy in need of a home to call his own.
It has now been a year since Rachel adopted Oliver, and she has written to us with an update to share:
“In 2022, I adopted a Husky-German Shepherd. After almost two years, I decided it was time to adopt a friend for her.
I checked out the BC SPCA North Cariboo Community Animal Centre and saw this beautiful two-year-old Golden Retriever-German Shepherd named Barkley.
When we first met, he was terrified of me. I sat on the floor with him and tried petting and giving him treats for about half an hour to win his trust. He instantly fell in love with my Husky. I just couldn’t say no.
So, I went home to discuss with my husband. Later that same day, we went back to adopt the beautiful boy now named Oliver. He was so excited to see me come back in. His tail was wagging and he gave me a big hug. I knew Oliver was going to be a wonderful dog for us.
One year later, Oliver is not nearly as reactive as he was before and he is learning to be happy in the car. He is no longer afraid of men. He’s no longer underweight—just a happy, healthy boy.
Oliver absolutely loves wrestling with his sister. He couldn’t be happier. I couldn’t be happier. I definitely made a good choice with him.”
Thank you, Rachel, for choosing adoption as your first option. We are so grateful that you took a chance on Oliver after spending those initial moments earning his trust. We can see that your Husky mix and Oliver have already formed a strong sibling bond, and their lives will be better for having each other in them as well as you.
