Emergency Care

Three Shiba Inu-Pit Bull mix dogs and puppies, a hairless Chihuahua and a cat are now safely in BC SPCA care following their rescue.

These animals were living in a cramped RV with items piled high to the ceiling. Any available floor was covered in animal feces, and the smell of urine was so overpowering staff could only spend short periods of time inside the vehicle. It’s heartbreaking to consider the conditions for both the animals and the people living in the RV.

All surfaces were thick with dirt, and the windows were so covered with grime it was hard to see out, except for the windshield. One room at the back was so crammed full of items and garbage that the door wouldn’t open. Even worse, there was no visible water available for the animals.

It is clear to see the negative impact their living conditions have had on these dogs and the single cat. They all have obvious skin issues, overgrown nails, and a stench of urine and cigarette smoke. They’ve needed deworming and antibiotics for uncomfortable skin conditions ranging from mange to flea dermatitis. On arrival, the Shiba Inu mix adult was missing most of the fur along his back due to his skin issues. Most of the animals have since had areas shaved and treated for flea infestations, cuts and hot spots on their skin.

It was clear they were all dehydrated and very hungry. At the first opportunity, the dogs strained at their leashes to drink from a puddle, and drank entire bowls of water in their kennels. On arrival the chihuahua and cat went directly to the food bowl offered and ate every morsel.

Each of the animals was nervous to start but also desperate for attention and human contact. What’s most touching to me is that despite how they have been living, they are all extremely friendly. They are keen to socialize with people and soak up as much love as they can get.

Thankfully, with kindness like yours beside them, they are looking ahead to a brighter future. If you are able, please consider making a caring gift today.

The staff looking after this group have already seen some wonderful parts of their personalities starting to blossom. The Shiba Inu mix is full of energy and just loves getting attention from people, as do the puppies. The hairless chihuahua has the most lovable face with his toothless grin and his tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. The cat is extremely chatty and affectionate. She’s enjoying all the attention and wants everyone to know how much!

With each day in our care, we can see the big difference their medical treatments are having. Thanks to the antibiotics, diet change and medicated baths, their skin conditions and overall health are already looking a lot stronger. This specialized care for animals in need is only made possible thanks to the love and caring contributions from people like you. You are a vital part of the team who transforms the lives of animals and we couldn’t do this work without you.

If this story has touched your heart, please know it is just one of many that our Animal Protection team has responded to this month. Unfortunately, this is not a unique case, and we experience many homes where people and animals are suffering due to mental health conditions, including hoarding.

Will you open your heart today to help the animals who need you like these dogs and cat?

As we work toward a world where animals and people can thrive side by side, we hold compassion at the centre of everything we do. Especially for those facing moments of deep vulnerability. By working closely with other social services, we support and care for animals and the people who love them. Through this shared care, we can create lasting change so fewer animals have to suffer like this group in the future.

All funds raised will protect vulnerable animals, and mobilize communities so animals and people can thrive together, by helping where the need is greatest
