Emergency Care for 21 Cats

When BC SPCA staff opened the RV door, dozens of anxious eyes stared back at them.

While many of these cats have extensive health issues, their previous guardians were doing the best they could given their circumstances. This is a devastating situation of animal hoarding which is a heartbreaking mental health issue. Please hold space in your caring heart today for both the animals and the people involved – they all deserve to receive the help they need, and your compassion will provide that.

Today you can kindly ensure these cats receive urgent care and have your loving gift matched up to $20,000, thanks to our caring friends Sharmini and Anil Wirasekara. Thank you for being the reason these animals have a chance to be loved again after all they’ve been through.

When staff entered the RV, the smell of urine and feces was overpowering. The trailer was a mess with cat food and cages everywhere; it was clear the situation had spiraled out of control, with far too many animals. While some of the cats were friendly, many were very fearful and hid in any space they could find. Gently and patiently, the team spent hours carefully removing these kitties and bringing them into safety.

Next is where your kindness steps in.

This group arrived with a range of medical issues: ear mites and infections, crusty eyes and nasal discharge, bite wounds, severe dental issues, diarrhea, heart problems, and fearful behaviour. Our veterinary team suspects some may also suffer from a chronic, painful disease and will need further tests. Fortunately, they are now able to receive the care they need thanks to you.

Though their backstory is long and complex, what’s most important is that their previous guardians were struggling with their own challenges. As soon as their wider family realised the suffering the cats were living in, they took quick steps to seek help. This family was kind, caring and made the right choice to ensure these animals received adequate care.

One cat, named Mouse, was so extremely fearful that staff weren’t sure how he’d be able to thrive in the world. He stayed pinned to the back of his kennel unsure of his caregivers or new surroundings. But with patience and gentle kindness, Mouse is slowly learning to trust — exploring a little more each day, accepting pets when they are offered and even reaching out his paw to gently touch the hand of staff close by! A show of his deepening trust that your compassion makes possible. It’s amazing to see what patience and love can do to heal the heart of an animal.
