EMERGENCY CARE

Tiny white kitten with eyes tight shut, being held in hand by a blue surgical glove

Kitten survives against all odds

When this tiny kitten was found, barely bigger than the palm of a hand with eyes still sealed shut, it seemed impossible that he could survive. With everything stacked against him, this sweet one fought to hold on, and now with your support, he doesn’t have to fight alone.

Kitten survives against all odds

When this tiny kitten was found, barely bigger than the palm of a hand with eyes still sealed shut, it seemed impossible that he could survive. With everything stacked against him, this sweet one fought to hold on, and now with your support, he doesn’t have to fight alone.

It’s hard to imagine a creature more vulnerable than a newborn kitten. But sometimes, the most fragile lives are also the fiercest. Alone in the world at just a day or so old, this little soul and his two siblings were lucky to be found by a kind animal-lover. Scattered across a scrap yard in different locations, it was clear their mother must have been in great distress. She’d left her babies at their most vulnerable and was nowhere to be seen despite extensive efforts to find her. The scrap yard worker knew there was no time to lose and carefully collected the three tiny kittens into the best carrier he could find – a Becel margarine container!

Newborns depend on their caregiver for every single survival need. Without someone stepping in immediately to provide them with warmth, food, hydration, immunity and safety, they have little chance of thriving. You can be that saviour here and now. When you choose to make a loving gift today, you’ll be giving more young ones like these kittens the chance to keep holding on.

The first 24 hours of care were a whirlwind. The primary focus was getting these young kittens life-saving fluids and providing them with the warmth their mother couldn’t give them, via an incubator. No matter how much love, care and expertise our teams pour in, life can be heartbreakingly short. The kittens’ care team worked around the clock to give them every chance at survival, but unfortunately the two girls just couldn’t keep fighting. Each loss weighs heavily on staff who care for every vulnerable animal who comes through the door. The devastation is real, but so is our commitment to keep fighting for those who can be saved.

Now all the focus is on Becel. The little boy, lovingly named after the container that brought him to safety.

He’s been placed in an experienced foster home where his surrogate mum is a dedicated human who gets up every two hours to bottle feed him. BC SPCA fosters are truly amazing! Since arriving into care last week, Becel has been weighed every day to ensure he’s putting on weight. He’s doing so well, and everyone is rooting for this fragile miracle to thrive.

Becel’s foster has a special heated water bottle for kittens to ensure they stay snug and warm. Monitoring their temperature is vital for survival at such a young age. It takes a village to give animals like Becel a second chance at life, from his rescuer who brought him to safety, to the BC SPCA staff who put their hearts and hands to his care, his dedicated foster parent, and our incredibly compassionate and caring community of donors like you. All of that means this little one is receiving everything he needs to get the best chance of a happy future. At this point, every extra hour with him is a celebration!

Your loving generosity today will ensure this gentle soul is given around the clock care until he’s strong enough to survive on his own. We already know he’s fighting his hardest to hold on, and every kind contribution strengthens our ability to save more lives.

Please keep this little one in your heart today. He’s doing his best but he still needs all the love, kindness and well wishes he can to get him through his most vulnerable time.

Sweet Becel is just one of the kittens in BC SPCA care right now. You can help this little fighter and all the other babies who need you today.
