They clean out countless litter boxes. They help drive animals from one shelter to another and take photos and videotape adoptable animals to help them find forever homes. They file boxes and boxes of papers, help with massive mail-outs and data entry and they foster kittens, puppies and animals who don’t fare well in shelter environments.
They are the BC SPCA’s nearly 5,000 volunteers across the province, whose contributions are invaluable, says BC SPCA manager of volunteer resources Michelle Rodgers.
With National Volunteer Week happening April 23-29 across Canada, Rodgers says that the BC SPCA simply couldn’t do its job without the many volunteers the society relies upon.
“Our volunteers never cease to amaze me,” she says. “They are truly inspiring! Their dedication to the animals, their work ethic, positive attitudes and passion for the BC SPCA’s mission is impressive, to say the least.”
In 2016, BC SPCA volunteers logged more than 140,000 hours of their time – and that doesn’t take into account the many volunteers who don’t log their hours, Rodgers notes.
While some may think that volunteering with the BC SPCA means playing with puppies and kittens all the time, the reality is that volunteering often means giving more of yourself and your time than you anticipated, Rodgers says.
“The devotion of our volunteers is immeasurable – when a large-scale animal seizure happens, or any time we put out a call to our volunteers for extra helping hands, they come through in droves, every time, because they love the animals we help and only want the best for them,” she says.
Whether cleaning out dog kennels, feeding shelter animals, taking animals to the vet or mucking out barn stalls for farm animals, BC SPCA volunteers go above and beyond what is expected, every time.
“Their commitment and care in helping the province’s most vulnerable animals is something we do not take for granted,” she says. “We can’t begin to thank them enough. We are so truly grateful for all that they do, every day, throughout the entire year.”
