Have you been thinking about building a catio in your backyard? This is the purr-fect time! Residents from the Kitsilano and Mount Pleasant neighbourhoods in Vancouver are eligible to win a free catio!
“We will provide a builder, the resources and support to eight selected residents to make their catio dream a reality,” says Marieke van der Velden, outreach specialist at the BC SPCA. “Catio winners will show off their feline-friendly backyards on the tour day early next year.”
For those unfamiliar with the term, a catio is a screened-in space – patio for cats if you will – attached to the home or free-standing, and often include perches, ramps and other enrichment for the cats. They are a great solution for cat guardians who want to keep their felines safe from outdoor hazards and provide supervised outdoor exercise time, while allowing them to snooze in the sun and enjoy the fresh air and sights.
“In addition to the benefits for the cat, catios also protect wildlife, like birds. This project will be a great opportunity to share with our community the benefits of keeping our cats and wildlife safer,” van der Velden explains. “We hope the event inspires people to build catios of their own, or consider other ways they can ensure the best welfare for both their cat and the wildlife in their neighbourhood.”
The catio tour concept originates from Portland, Oregon where a similar event has successfully drawn and excited hundreds of residents on the benefits of catios for seven years in a row.
Interested homeowners in the neighbourhoods of Kitsilano and Mount Pleasant in Vancouver can apply online to be considered. The deadline for applications is Sept. 30, 2018.
