BC SPCA removes 38 neglected dogs from Kamloops-area breeder

April 8, 2021

BC SPCA animal protection officers have removed 10 adult dogs and 28 puppies from a Kamloops-area property. The miniature dachshunds were living in substandard and filthy conditions, in cages and other areas with excessive feces, high levels of ammonia from urine and surrounded by injurious objects. The dogs are poorly socialized and very fearful.

“This is a situation where the dogs were being kept in unacceptable conditions and were being bred for profit,” says Eileen Drever, senior officer of protection and stakeholder relations for the BC SPCA. “We had attended the property and given the owner opportunities to improve the conditions for the animals as is required under our legislation, but when the owner did not comply a warrant was obtained to remove the dogs for their safety and well-being.”

The dogs are receiving veterinary assessments and will receive on-going care and behavioural support at the SPCA, but are not available for adoption at this time.

“Whenever we have a large-scale intake of animals from a cruelty investigation, it put a tremendous strain on our resources,” says Drever. “The BC SPCA is very grateful to animal lovers for their support in helping to ensure these dogs and puppies get the care they need.”
